Episode 2 of the Next Internet Millionaire

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2007

The second episode of the Next Internet Millionaire reality show, hosted by Joel Comm, is now available to watch.

During episode two, Armand Morin spoke about the importance of branding, and there was a challenge between the two teams on the Next Internet Millionaire to create a branding campaign for the next season of the show.

Contestants were also given the task of creating a blog and making a post in the span of an hour.

After watching this episode, I’ve got to agree partly with Lisa Picarille, Editor and Publisher of Revenue Magazine, from the comments on her blog:

“…there isn’t anyone on the show who seems to perform any better at these tasks than I could. I’m willing to admit my many limitations but I know I could run circles around these contestants.”

The contestants came in with some compelling pedigrees, but I’ve got to say I was underwhelmed by their output in the challenges during episode 2.

That said, I’m into the show and anxious to see the next episode.

Sergey Brin - the College Years

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2007

Ronald Bell and Sergey Brin on Spring BreakBack in May 1993, I graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park. One of my fellow graduates was Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.

I was just looking back at some old pictures of our college days, and have to wonder why Sergey’s days as a Terp are minimized in press coverage, in favor of his times at Stanford University.

We had good times back in College Park, didn’t we, Sergey?

Sergey Brin and Ronald Bell TailgatingI’d have to imagine that all the tailgates at Byrd Stadium, all-nighters in the computer lab in Hornbake, marathon sessions of Tecmo Bowl, and late nights at the Vous must have contributed in a big way to the foundation of Google, right?

Once a Terrapin, always a Terrapin!

Video Ad Network from Magnify.net

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2007

Magnify.net, the video community site that’s been increasingly popular with affiliate marketers, is inviting site owners to participate in a beta test of its new advertising program, the Magnify Ad Share Platform, according to TechCrunch.

The AdShare Network gives site owners the ability to earn directly from their video channels, both from the network itself and by allowing users to deploy their own ad inventory.

The ads running on Magnify.net are “traditional” advertising that goes around the videos, as opposed to the overlay ads recently launched on YouTube.

The launch of the Magnify Ad Share Platform was also covered by NewTeeVee, where they stated that Magnify.net CEO Steve Rosenbaum created the video ad network because of a “user revolt.”

Previously, Magnify.net enabled video community owners to generate revenue with ads from Google AdSense and Revver.

I touched base with Steve Rosenbaum to ask about the revolt.

“What the reporter didn’t get was that while Wayne (Porter) did push us over the edge, a lot of what we learned at Affiliate Summit was pretty critical in our thinking as well.

What I learned in Miami was that there is a huge community of smart, engaged, advertising savvy Internet entrepreneurs who are looking for ways to add video to their offerings and make money from that traffic.

Magnify.net’s decision to open our ad network is a tip of the hat to the affiliate marketing community.”

Communicating with Your Affiliates

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2007

This is chapter 12, Communicating with Your Affiliates, of Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants.

This is one of the most important chapters of the book, because as I mentioned before, it’s all about relationships.

I’m going to talk about some different ways to communicate with your affiliates.

It’s somewhat basic, but a lot of affiliate managers don’t take advantage of the opportunities out there to communicate.

One essential step is to segment your affiliates based on their performance history.

Depending on where they are on the affiliate marketing learning curve, affiliates want and need different degrees of communication. Newer affiliates will require a degree of hand holding, while veterans won’t want that sort of treatment.

Break out your affiliates into 3-4 groups based on what they need and how they perform. Then message them accordingly.

You don’t want to send out elementary tips to an affiliate who is already generating 10,000 sales a month for you.

Also, something I rarely see affiliate managers use is snail mail. Give this a try with postcards or other mail to activate affiliates, maybe a gift at holiday time or recognize them at their birthday.

Additionally, send your affiliates promotional items. If your company goes to trade shows, and you’ve got some giveaways available in the office, shoot them out to affiliates.

Another thing that’s good is to send them samples of your products. Assuming they are not a customer already, you can send them some things they can use and make a review on their site.

Also, there are a dozen or so ways you can communicate effectively with your affiliates. You should use this whole arsenal to its full potential.

I’ll name some things you can tap into that I personally use myself:

  • Blogs - set up a blog for your affiliate program as a means to communicate with the affiliates.
  • E-mail - of course, I should hope that you’re already getting back to your affiliates by e-mail.
  • Facebook - increasingly, affiliate programs are establishing a presence on Facebook, where you can communicate and commune with your affiliates.
  • Forums - consider getting a sponsored forum at ABestWeb or other places that offer them. This is a place you can have public exchanges with many affiliates at once.
  • Instant Messenger - I’d suggest getting Trillian. There are free and paid versions, and they both allow you to run all of your IM clients in one place.
  • Newsletters - you should be sending out newsletters regularly. Use this to share promotion information, deadlines, etc.
  • Telephone - this is one of the least used of the tools. Start picking up the telephone more!
  • Resource site - as the name suggests, it’s a place where affiliates can get information, news, tips, etc. regarding you affiliate program. Much more effective than a single page about the affiliate program on the corporate site.
  • Cutting edge tools - keep on top of stuff like Twitter, where you can pass along short bits of information to lots of affiliates who subscribe to receive the updates from you.

So those are some things I’d suggest doing to more effectively communicate with your affiliates. try leveraging these suggestions, and I’m sure it will improve your affiliate program.

DMOZ Scandal, Badware at Revver, and a Class Action Lawsuit

Posted by admin On August - 29 - 2007

Lisa Picarille and myself welcomed Kellie Stevens of AffiliateFairPlay.com to the latest Affiliate Thing show.

Topics discussed included an update on an update on a class action lawsuit against ValueClick, Commission Junction, and Be Free, as well as Revver allowing Zango to monetize their videos.

We also discussed a new affiliate play on Facebook by Chitika, recap of Missy Ward and Connie Berg as Affiliates Against Cancer, an affiliate marketing survey from E consultancy, plus a whole bunch of free, instructional videos for affiliate managers.

Listen to this episode now. The Affiliate Thing show airs weekly on Wednesdays at noon EST. Tune in at http://www.WebmasterRadio.FM.

Subscribe to the Affiliate Thing RSS feed or send a blank e-mail to affiliatething@aweber.com to get each podcast delivered by e-mail.

Kellie Stevens has reported over at AffiliateFairPlay.com that things are moving forward with the class action lawsuit against ValueClick, Commission Junction, and Be Free.

It looks like a ruling was handed down yesterday on ValueClick’s motions to dismiss. From the web site of the plaintiff’s attorneys:

“On August 27, 2007, the Honorable Florence-Marie Cooper issued two orders denying, in part, ValueClick’s Motions to Dismiss the Class Action Complaints. The Court held that Defendants failed to meet their burden of establishing that Plaintiffs could not proceed in the lawsuits.”

Not the sort of news to put the folks in the Santa Barbara in a festive mood as we near Commission Junction University on September 9-11.

I’ve completed short recap videos for all thirteen chapters of my book, Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants. The video chapters summarize the original chapters and include some updates.

Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants, dubbed the “bible of affiliate marketing” by Revenue magazine, was published in April 2001.

Back then, affiliate marketing expert Allan Gardyne stated, “If you manage an affiliate program, you need this book.”

Many things have changed in affiliate marketing since it was published. So I thought it was time to update and recap the industry.
