An Affiliate Done Wrong

Posted by admin On November - 30 - 2007

I just wanted to share frustrating affiliate story with you. Back on November 2, 2007, I was accepted by the YouSendIt affiliate program.

I was interested in promoting YouSendIt, because I’ve been a satisfied, paying customer of their service for a while, and I’ve recommended them (without compensation) to lots of people.

If you’re not familiar with the service, it’s a way to transfer and share really big files (up to 2GB), and I’ve found it really useful to share big video files, PowerPoint, etc.

Anyhow, I was planning to run a whole big campaign to promote YouSendIt in my blog, sites, newsletters, etc.

But the other day, when I logged into Commission Junction to check my internal messages, I found out that they had booted me from the affiliate program.

YouSendIt Affiliate Kicked Out

There was no reason given, so I am assuming they had this idea that affiliates would become instantly active and generate tons of leads.

The reality is that it doesn’t happen that way.

A lot of people talk about the 80/20 rule, or even 95/5, where 5% of affiliates are generating 95% of the transactions.

Then there is the long tail of affiliates that can bring in a few leads each per month.

I think I could have been in the top echelon there for YouSendIt, and driven good number of new customers to them.

But now I’ve been alienated both as an affiliate and a paying customer.

I would encourage affiliate managers to take this into consideration before pruning bunches of affiliates from their program so quick and without cause.

Affiliate marketing isn’t a channel where you can hit a magic button and get results.

You need to do some hands on work - affiliates are partners with the merchants and should be treated as such.

I never got a phone call or e-mail from YouSendIt to try and activate me or ask how I planned to promote them. They just bounced me after a few weeks for no reason.

Happy Holidays, YouSendIt.

New Web Services Sales Tracking Tool from LinkShare

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2007

LinkShare has announced a new Web Services sales tracking technology that touts enhanced security and real-time transaction data on an enterprise-level for advertisers.

According to LinkShare, this release enables the safest transfer of information while handling the richest amount of SKU data delivered real-time.

Unlike pixel or other tracking technologies dependent on browsers and cookies, this tracking solution allows advertisers to utilize a Web Service to push transaction-level data to LinkShare in real time instead of batch mode. Advertisers then receive a unique ID to verify the transaction. The unique ID makes this a fully verifiable and reliable enterprise-level tracking solution.

I’m interested to hear more about this solution. Does this mark the death of the pixel?

Affiliate Managers are Spamming Me

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2007

I am working on a new affiliate site and recently applied to a large number of affiliate programs.

Soon after, I began receiving e-mails to confirm my application from all, and welcome e-mails from some. Days passed, and I was surprised that a lot of the affiliate programs hadn’t reviewed the applications, yet.

Well, not so surprised. Plenty of affiliate managers take weeks or months to approve or deny affiliate applications, but I wasn’t seeing anything from upwards of 75% of them.

Then I took a look at my Spam folder in Outlook. What do you know - these welcome e-mails were sent after all, but they were classified as Spam by Outlook.

Word to the wise - test your e-mails through filters in AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Spam Assassin, etc.

You may well have bunches of affiliates that want to promote you and don’t realize they were approved.

Seesmic - the Video Twitter Revolution?

This week on the Affiliate Thing, we chatted with Seesmic creator Loic Le Meur about the new pre-alpha video site, comparisons to Twitter, user monetization and more.

We also touched on good news on retail sales from Cyber Monday, affiliate managers asleep at the switch, and a Fatblogging update.

Plus, we talked about the ELOANS affiliate program abruptly closing, microblog overload, and the CNN/YouTube Republican Debate.

Affiliate Fatblogging, Episode 3

It’s getting colder outside, so I don’t know how much longer I can go for long walks to get exercise and catch up on marketing podcasts. I think I’ll set a rule of walking whenever the temperature is above freezing.

Anyhow, that means it is time to join a gym.

Then I’ll be able to get up on the elliptical, treadmill, etc. as it turns cold around here.

So I went and joined the local gym yesterday. The good thing is that I can go there during the middle of the day with my random affiliate schedule.

When I signed up, it was around noon yesterday and maybe five people were in the place. When I’ve passed by around 6 or 7 at night, the gym was packed.

On another note, I found out that if I go a certain number of times per month to the gym, my health insurance plan will cover the gym cost - nice incentive to keep a regular schedule of exercising.

Also, I’ve had some affiliates ask the status on my comment last week that Weight Watchers had not yet reviewed my affiliate application.

Another week and my application is still pending with them. Wake up over there - you shouldn’t be sitting on applications for weeks. Especially since affiliates will want to construct campaigns around diets as we approach the new year.

All that aside, I’m happy with my continued progress using the Weight Watchers Core plan. I’ve lost another couple pounds in the past week. So, I’m about 24% to my goal, which I want to achieve no later than the first day of Affiliate Summit (February 24, 2008).

Starting weight: 216
Current weight: 211
Target weight: 195

Holiday Sales for Online Shopping Exceed Expectations

Posted by admin On November - 28 - 2007

Wall Street analysts and internet retailers are saying that online shopping sales in the U.S. have been growing at better-than-expected rates in the run-up to the holidays, according to the Financial Times.

Raul Vazquez, chief executive of Walmart.com, said the retailer had seen sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving holiday “exceed our expectations” of 40-60 per cent annual growth.

Ron LaPierre, president of PriceGrabber, a comparison shopping site, said sales through its site had been running “at or above expectations” so far.

Over the holiday weekend, sales had grown 45 per cent on last year, although the seasonal pick-up in demand had come later than last year.
